Welcome to a slightly different blog… From now on Ali will be writing a purely climbing blog and I’ll be covering the “other stuff”. So if you want the beta on his latest crushes click HERE, or read on for the more fluffy stuff from our travels and non climbing life...

Pyrenees Part II - Colomina

We began the second Pyrenean trip hoping to get back into some serious sport climbing at Collegats, a spectacular steep sided gorge which is supposed to have inspired the Catalan architect Gaudi, designer of the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona.

We'd intended to climb at Sector Pedrera, a shaded but striking wall reached only by a tyrolean traverse across the gorge. Now we know full well that you need a steel "tandem" pulley to run over a steel cable like this, but given this is a fairly expensive and specialist piece of kit and the traverse was only short we thought we'd try and botch it with our aluminium pulley or some karabiners... Oh how wrong we were! The aluminum pulley visibly started to disintegrate before we'd even left the river bank and the karabiners just kept snagging, meaning what should have been a smooth glide across the cable turned into a knackering series of pull ups (with a full rucksack of climbing gear) and yet more visibly shredding metal. Suffice to say we retreated - lesson learned!

We did a few routes at another sector in the gorge as well as a day down at Terradets, but came to the conclusion that sport climbing, even in shady sectors in the dense humidity and ridiculous heat of mid-August in Spain is not actually that pleasant! Far better to sunbathe, sightsee and head up high! So after imbibing a bit of culture at some castles and churches it was up high we went, this time to the Colomina area of the Pyrenees. Far less sweaty and not a tyrolean in sight! :-)

Steel cable... needs a steel pulley.

Thwarted.

Sector Argenteria - Some pleasant climbing on the sunny side of the gorge.

The Argenteria wall - inspiration to Gaudi?

Guadi's version...

View from the top - spot any similarities to the Sagrada Familia?

Spanish dude cranking hard (shortly before he fell off).

Watching the kayakers in Sort.

Setting sun at Mur Castle.

Town Hall at Pobla de Segur.

Intricate mosaics at the Town Hall...

Bit more culture and night photography in Val Fosca...

Walking up to Colomina through the old railway tunnels...

The flying sardine tin! (a.k.a the cheat's way up!)

No photoshop here - the water really was that colour!

Pretty flowers underfoot :-)

Sainsbury's did us proud for tea!

Exploring the remains of the old railway...

Horses on the tracks in the old days!

A beautiful meadow - not a bad camp spot!

Delicate flowers dotted around the stream...

Our meadow by night (I was on torch duty inside the tent)

Climbing above Estany de Mar (Sector La Vaca Lechera for any climbing geeks).

Refreshing!

A few more shots from around our meadow...

The crystal clear stream winding its way through... perfectly pure drinking water

Marsh orchids in abundance!

A local resident.

Summit of Pic de la Colomina after a short but sweet route up the granite NE face.

Watching the big bad storm roll in!

Thankfully the storm was short-lived and the skies cleared...

A spot of tea at 2500m...

Ali cranking up a stunning arete (Los pulmones Bien, Gracias 7a+).

More lovely flowers! There were just so many varieties up here :-)

Bye bye Colomina :-( Back down the tunnels and tracks to civilisation and a shower!

Pyrenees - Cavallers

After a fantastic trip to the UK we're now back in Spain. Keen to enjoy the remainder of our summer holiday we headed up to our trusty favourite area, the Aiguestortes National Park. We spent best part of a week climbing both around and above the Cavallers Dam - a pleasant shock to the system after so long away from the rock!

Walking in under ominous skies... actually our second attempt that afternoon due to showers!

Getting higher despite a very heavy bag full of climbing and camping gear!

Morning reflections over the lake...

Climbers in the morning sun

Another vivid marsh orchid!

Checking out the guidebook! (And yes, I am wearing shorts over thermal tights. I forgot my trousers)

Refugi Ventosa i Cavell (2220m)

More clusters of photogenic marsh orchids! Ali had to stand in many a bog in pursuit of the perfect shot!

Some randoms climbing above the refuge (El Santuri)

Teetering on the amazing arete (Clara Luna 6c). Not a badly positioned route even if I couldn't actually climb it!

Trying not to fall in!

A little hug on the way back down to our campsite

Walking back up the hill for another day climbing by the refuge!

Testing my balance skills (and hoping the tree didn't break).

Playing with the polariser!

Gotcha! Marmots were easy enough to spot but didn't seem to like having their photo taken... not without a huge telephoto lens anyway. We don't have one of these (yet?!).

Enjoying some granite slab climbing on Paret del Negre

Not a bad camping spot! (even if a lot of the climbing is way up the big hill in the distance!)

Ali gets up in the small hours to capture the star trails... the skies are pretty amazing up here!

Hello Ali! The closest you get to a photo of him these days...

Bearded French dude slab-padding above the Cavallers Dam. Nice moustache.

Some more lovely mountain flowers...

Feeling smug but knackered after an hour's slog up to this point... actually just the start of our climbing objective, a 6 pitch route up this granite wall (Comalestorres for any interested climbing geeks). I like the way this lens lengthens my legs!

Made it. View from the top of Comalestorres...

More mountain flowers... so pretty!

Back to the car in the nick of time as a HUGE thunderstorm hits the mountains. Wouldn't want to be climbing now!
