Welcome to a slightly different blog… From now on Ali will be writing a purely climbing blog and I’ll be covering the “other stuff”. So if you want the beta on his latest crushes click HERE, or read on for the more fluffy stuff from our travels and non climbing life...

The long road home

Having a British car we have to drive the 1000 mile journey back to UK every summer for its MOT. Normally we end up driving through France as quickly as possible, saying "one day we should stop there" as we pass numerous brown signs. Well, this year we finally left a bit of time to do this, stopping in the Dordogne and Brittany to revisit some old haunts from family holidays...

The Gouffre de Padirac - An impressive showcave in the Dordogne. We thought this was new to both of us but turns out Ali has been here before!

The giant lift down the entrance shaft

Admiring some cave art

Amazing formations inside the cave

Bridges over the river... We actually had a private boat tour along here as we were the last ones in the cave for the afternoon - normally you have to cram into a boat with 10 other people!

Stunning clear waters and formations

Some typically French villages in the Dordogne - tres belle

Happy Birthday Al! The name was spelled correctly but someone was a bit too eager to eat it.

Morning light hits Rocamador...

Je voudrais vivrir en cette maison.

More quaint villages - the Dordogne is lovely :-)

Then it was north to Normandy to visit some of the battlefields, beaches and cemeteries along the coast...

Wandering among the craters and gun batteries, pretty sobering stuff (even though the kids in this photo were later playing zombie attacks)

The beaches at Arramanches - hard to imagine such nice beaches were once a battlefield

Morning clouds over Calais... waiting for our ferry down the coast rather than at the port. Far nicer!

Back in Bucklebury with our nephew Henry. Henry admiring my antique phone...
